Distinguished and Famous people from The Yorke Peninsula
✈️ Harry Butler
Aviator Harry Butler was born at Yorketown in 1889 and grew up on a farm at Koolywurtie near Minlaton. His fascination with flight reportedly extended to studying the wings of his mother’s hens—an early experiment for which the hens’ opinion is unrecorded. After service and flying instruction during the First World War, he returned with aircraft including the Bristol monoplane known as the Red Devil. On 6 August 1919 he flew mail from Adelaide to Minlaton, where thousands gathered to see him arrive. For many spectators it was their first sight of an aeroplane. The Red Devil was later preserved in the Captain Harry Butler Memorial at Minlaton.
🏉 Adam Goodes
Adam Goodes was born at Wallaroo in 1980 and became one of Australian football’s outstanding players. An Adnyamathanha and Narungga man, he played 372 games for the Sydney Swans, won two Brownlow Medals and was a member of the club’s 2005 and 2012 premiership teams. His contribution extended beyond football through advocacy against racism and support for Indigenous education. With Michael O’Loughlin he co-founded the GO Foundation, which provides educational opportunities for young Indigenous people. Named Australian of the Year in 2014, Goodes has a national public story whose birthplace is firmly on Yorke Peninsula, at Wallaroo.
✍️ Oswald Pryor
Cartoonist and author Oswald Pryor was born at Moonta Mines in 1881. He entered the mining company’s workshops at thirteen, studied at night and became a mechanical draftsman and later manager of the cementation works. Alongside that practical career he developed a sharp eye for the humour of Cornish mining life. His drawings brought miners, chapel communities and their everyday preoccupations to readers of the Bulletin and other publications. Books including Cornish Pasty and Australia’s Little Cornwall preserved that world in print. He was also a church organist, combining an ear for music with a cartoonist’s eye for human foibles.
